2020년 7월, 서울시립 북서울미술관에서 제11회 서울사진축제가 열립니다. 이번 서울사진축제는 주제 기획전 <<보고싶어서>>와 한국 사진사 정리 연속 기획전 <<카메라당전성시대>> 두 가지로 구성됩니다. 전시 준비 과정에는 예상하지 못했던 코로나19로 인하여 사회적 거리두기가 일상이 된 현재상황에서, 전시 제목 <<보고싶어서>>는 미처 상상하지 못한 울림을 가집니다. 지금 전 지구를 강타하고 있는 코로나 유행병은 사람 사이의 물리적 거리를 넓힐 뿐 아니라 차단과 격리 그리고 때로는 영원한 이별을 가져오기도 합니다. 친구이거나 고양이거나 아니면 푸른 나무일 수도 있는, 사랑하는 상대가 보고 싶을 때(그러나 보지 못할 때) 흔히 그렇듯 우리는 자연스럽게 사진으로 이들을 대신합니다. 아마도 사람의 이동이 극도로 제한된 지난 몇 개월 사이, 부재의 대상을 대체하는 이미지들은 폭발적으로 증가했을 것입니다.

In July, 2020, the 11th Seoul Photo Festival opens at SeMA, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art. This festival consists of two sections; A special exhibition entitled Unphotographical Moment and a serial exhibition on Korean photography history archive, The Heyday of Kameradang. Although it was completely unexpected at the time of planning, the exhibition title - ‘Missing You’ (translation of the Korean title, the English title is Unphotographical Moment) - feels unexpectedly poignant when considering our current everyday life of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic that is currently devastating our entire world, is forcing us to physically distance, isolate and quarantine ourselves from others, and at times, say goodbye to our loved ones forever. Whatever it is - a friend, a cat, a lush tree, or a loved one - that we long for (but cannot see), we naturally look at the photographs to replace their absence. As travel has been extremely restricted over the past few months, the number of images that replaces such void must have increased more than ever.

카메라당 전성시대: 작가의 탄생과 공모전 연대기
<<서울사진축제>>에서는 2019년부터 연속 기획 전시로 한국사진사를 정리하고 새롭게 조명하는 작업을 진행해오고 있다. 지난해에는 <<명동싸롱과 1950년대 카메라당>>이라는 제목으로 1950년대 한국사진의 지형과 실천들을 살펴보았는데, 올해는 그 연장선상에서 <<카메라당 전성시대: 작가의 탄생과 공모전 연대기>>라는 제목하에 1910년부터 1981년 사이에 개최된 사진 공모전을 주제로 한국사진사를 정리하고자 한다.

The Heyday of Kameradang: A Chronicle of Photography Contests
In 2019, Seoul Photo Festival launched an exhibition series focusing on the history of Korean photography and reestablishing its legacy. Following last year’s Myungdong Salon and the Kameradang in the 1950s which examined the landscape of Korean photography in the 1950s, this year’s presentation - The Heyday of Kameradang: A Chronicle of Photography Contents - explores the history of photography contests in Korea from the 1910s to 1981, and its impact of Korean photography.
